Another custard square review from afar - this time from my mother. I do enjoy receiving these, so if you feel you know a notable custard square purveyor feel free to send me some photos, a description, the name of the vendor, and a rating out of 10. ;-) Anything to find the best in our fair land!
Much like the custard squares from the Wellington City New World, this was really more than a single serving, so the photo below is of half only; Mum cut it in two to make supper for her and Dad. This was apparently picked up at a reduced price as yesterday's stock and was only $2 - pretty good for dessert/supper for two!
As for the taste - the pastry was soggy, but the combination of the pastry, sweet, sugary icing and set custard filling was pronounced to be as it should be (for a supermarket custard square, anyway). Mum's rating was 5/10, but for the price and based on her expectations was happy with it; she prefers (as do I) the fluffy Denheath custard squares, but as they are usually about twice the price of this for a single serving you can perhaps appreciate the rightful place of the average, sweet, supermarket bakery offering.
What do you think? Is there a time and a place for the mediocre dessert or do you prefer to save your calories (and your pennies) for a real treat?

Hi! I'm Rosa, a.k.a. Mrs Cake, and I live in Wellington, New Zealand. I love food, especially making pretty cakes and desserts and of course eating! I love dining out and this blog enables me to share both my experiences in my own kitchen and my take on various restaurants and cafes around Wellington (and anywhere else we go!).

I'm not a huge fan of sweet food unless it's done really, really well. So I'd rather save up for a real treat! Always pick starters over dessert thoguh.
I think there is definitely a place for simple dessert - sometimes just a piece of fruit, or half a biscuit - but I have no patience or room for bad-tasting dessert!
Yeah - I occasionally cave in to something average but usually regret it, so prefer a good, proper sweet if I'm going to throw all those calories away. ;-)
